Itinerary

DAY 1, Monday, June 18, 2007 - We will depart from Medford on United Airlines to begin our journey.  We will make one domestic connection and then connect to Lufthansa Airlines in Frankfurt, Germany for our final flight into Bilbao, Spain.  Dinner on board the aircraft. D

DAY 2, Tues. - Upon arrival in Bilbao, we will meet our driver and guide and drive to Sarria where we will visit the Samos Monastery, an active Benedictine Monastery originally founded in the 6th century.  The architect for the monastery was one of its own monks, Juan Vázquez. We will stop for a picnic lunch along the way and then have dinner and overnight near Sarria.     BLD

DAY 3, Wed. - Today we start our 115 KM walk to Santiago taking in the sites of the small country churches, oak and chestnut groves and farm life along the way.  Upon arrival in Portomarin, we will visit the Church of San Juan, which was moved stone by stone from its original location down in the river valley.  This afternoon we visit the city of Lugo where we will walk along the 1800 year old Roman Wall encircling the historical quarter.  Overnight Portomarin.  Walking distance 23.5 KM/14.5 miles.     BLD

DAY 4, Thurs. - Today’s hilly walk continues through field and forest filled with countless examples of Galician vernacular architecture – wayside crosses, granaries, and medieval bridges.  We will take an afternoon excursion to the Castillo de Pambre, one of the few intact 15th century castles in Galicia.  Overnight Palas de Rei.  Walking distance 24.5 km/15.2 miles.     BLD

DAY 5, Fri. - This morning we will walk to the small bustling town of Melide where we will visit the Ethnographic Museum.  We continue to the medieval pilgrims’ hospital and bridge spanning the Río Iso.  We will board our coach and drive Arzúa.  We will take an afternoon excursion to the Portodemouros Reservoir where we can rent kayaks on our own (approximately 9 Euro) or visit the Museo de Mel (Honey Museum) (approximately 2.5 Euro).  Overnight Arzúa.  Walking distance 26 KM/16.2 miles.   BLD

DAY 6, Sat. - This morning the bus will take us back to where our walk ended on Friday and we will continue our walk to Arca.  We will visit the Monastery of Sobrado, founded in the 10th century and still an active monastery today.  We will have dinner and overnight Arca.  Walking distance 22 KM/13.6 miles.     BLD

DAY 7, Sun. - During this, the final stage of our journey, we will continue our walk into Santiago as so many pilgrims have done before.  We will stop and reflect on the Monte del Gozo (Mount Joy) from which the spires of the Cathedral can be seen.  When we arrive in Santiago, we will have a guided tour of Santiago de Compostela with a local guide.  Overnight Santiago de Compostela.  Walking distance 21.5 KM/13.3 miles.     BLD

DAY 8, Mon. - Today we will be free to explore Santiago de Compostela on our own in small groups.  We will attend the Pilgrims’ Mass where we will see the Botafumeiro, a 4 foot incense burner that is swung across the cathedral.  In the medieval days, the incense was burned to mask the smell of the pilgrims in the church.   We will also go to the Pilgrim’s Office where we will turn in our Pilgrim’s Passport in exchange for our Compostela Certificates.  We will overnight in Santiago de Compostela.    B

DAY 9, Tues. - Today we begin our journey via Pontevedra and Vigo to the Portugese border and continue on to Cabedelo Beach.  We will enjoy our afternoon at Cabedelo Beach which is surrounded by a pine wood, has many restaurants and wonderful shopping.  It is located on the south side of the Lima River which runs through this quaint Portugese town. We will board our bus and travel the short 50 miles to the town of Porto where we will enjoy our “farewell to Spain and Portugal” dinner and have our final overnight.  BD

DAY 10, Wednesday, June 27, 2007 - We will have a very early wake up call and then transfer to the airport at Porto, Portugal where we will bid goodbye to our driver and guide and board our return flight to the U.S. arriving back this afternoon.  BLS
