Christ the King Sunday sermon and reflection

St Mark's Medford, Episcopal, Rev Les Ferguson, Message, Pentecost, Ordinary time

Good day from foggy Medford on the last Sunday of our liturgical year, Christ the King Sunday, a day which reminds us of the true kingship for good found in Jesus of Nazareth.

Our invitation to worship is a prayer asking for Jesus’ presence in our lives and communities so we can help creation overcome division and discord. Our first lesson from the prophet Jeremiah assures us of God’s ultimate judgement on those who destroy or lead God’s people astray. The Canticle sings the blessings of God and reminds us we are truly blessed. The New Testament reading from Colossians connects Jesus as God incarnate and the one who will rescue the world from its sin and serve as an example for us to follow. Our Gospel from Luke is the account of Jesus on the cross and his interactions with the crowd and the thieves who were crucified with him.

On Christ the King Sunday, or alternatively the Reign of Christ Sunday, we are reminded of the source of true power and the power and influence of a true king. Not an earthly king who rules with human foibles and follies, but rather as one who rules with compassion, relationships, and the power of patience and persistence. Christ’s reign reminds that we have true power to do everything we need to do to ensure God’s kingdom and justice are found in the world. Our job is to connect with others and recognize their worthiness in God’s eyes.

How will you capitalize on the reign of Christ in your life to refocus your life this coming Advent? How do you trust in the reign of Christ to supply everything you need for success in you life of faith? I invite your comments,
Les+
